Property description

Collegiate Church of St. Mary Its silhouette and characteristic triple steeple of the tower block has been visible from land, sea, and air for centuries. It has become a permanent element of the city’s panorama, and a beloved place of the inhabitants. The Concathedral Basilica of Kołobrzeg is a living witness to history. It has been the house of God for more than 700 years. Church of St. John the Baptist Church of St. John the Baptist – first mentioned in documents from 1222, is located east of the city walls on a small hill among old trees (oaks, beeches). The sign of the beginning and end of the walking tourist trail of Jan Frankowski is painted on one of the trees. The church is the only early medieval site in Kołobrzeg. It is also the oldest brick sacred object in Central Pomerania. It was funded by Duchess Mirosława, the wife of the West Pomeranian Duke Bogusław II, a straight-line great grandson of the King of Poland, Bolesław Krzywousty. The church used to be surrounded by a cemetery. Several years after the war some of the tombstones still remained, but no more funerals were performed. There is currently no trace of the old cemetery visible. The church was built of brick on a rectangle projection, in the Roman style. Like in the majority of medieval churches, its main altar is oriented to the East. The church was expanded in the 15th century by the main altar and not Roman, but Gothic ogival portals. The church was originally entered through two portals in the northern and southern elevation. They are bricked up today. It is interesting that one of the entries (northern one) was used by women, and the other one by men. The church has been damaged and reconstructed several times. The Neo-Gothic windows in the northern and southern elevation come from the 19th century. Source: Official Website of the City of Kołobrzeg
